In our previous blog and video, we talked about ways that SOG carried mags and surplus options that we could use today. I loved all the comments. The gear and history nerds really showed up and I learned a lot, plus I got several recommendations on pouches. So, as I do, I went on eBay and grabbed a few of the suggestions, including a 100rd SAW pouch, IFAK pouch, and British Osprey GP pouch. I also dug out some bungee and a barrel lock to try adding some tension to the looser pouches, as suggested by another user.
100 round SAW pouch

The 100 round SAW pouch will technically hold 5 metal magazines. They’re relatively tight inside the pouch with almost no play. The two issues I find with it are 1) it doesn’t have a secondary closure and 2) I have not been able to get the side-release buckles to close with 5 magazines. The buckle isn’t adjustable, at least on my pouch, and the mags are too long to allow the lid to fully seat when fully loaded. However, it will close with 4 magazines.

IFAK pouch

The IFAK pouch is roughly the same size as the 100 round SAW pouch. It also holds 5 magazines well. However, it suffers from the same issue as the SAW pouch – it won’t close with 5 mags. It will, however, close with 4 mags and does have a secondary closure.

Osprey GP pouch

The GP pouch is actually British surplus, but is fairly available on eBay. It can hold 6 mags easily, has a secondary closure, and closes without issue with all 6 mags. It is looser than the SAW or IFAK pouch, which brings me to the tensioner that was mentioned.

Tensioner

Many of the double mag pouches on the market have elastic running across the front to maintain tension in the pouch once you withdraw the first mag. None of the SAW pouches we’ve covered have one. However, you can make your own. If you run a piece of bungee through a MOLLE loop in the back of the pouch, over the front, through a loop on the opposite side, and attach a barrel lock, you can create an adjustable tensioner to minimize mag movement within the pouch.

Conclusion
Again, I really enjoyed the interaction on the SOG post. It was fun to get the suggestions and try them out, as well as learn so much history. I hope this follow-up is useful to you as well!
